In January 2008, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized The Forks as the home of the longest skating rink in the world at 8.54 kilometres along the Red and Assiniboine rivers. The ‘rink’ is open from December to February (conditions permitting).

Esplanade Riel is a pedestrian bridge across the Red River, connecting downtown Winnipeg, with St. Boniface. The bridge is named in honour of Louis Riel and is paired with the vehicular Provencher Bridge. Esplanade Riel has a tower with a plaza area for businesses and a restaurant.
