Hoodoos, also known as fairy chimneys and earth pyramids, are 5 to 7 metre high rock pillars of sandstone standing on shale and capped with by harder rock that is more resistant to time, wind and rain. Hoodoos take millions of years to form. They are very fragile and can erode completely if their capstone is dislodged. Hoodoos can be found all over the Badlands, and are most easily seen on the Hoodoos Trail in Drumheller, Alberta.
