Salt fish was once shipped to the West Indies in exchange for rum, resulting in fish becoming a national dish for Jamaicans and rum (Screech) becoming a traditional drink for Newfoundlanders. Newfoundland Screech is a Jamaican rum with 40% alcohol by volume, blended and bottled by the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation.
