British Columbia (BC) is the westernmost of the Canadian provinces and is known for its natural beauty. In 1871, it became the sixth province of Canada. British Columbia is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west, by the U.S. state of Alaska on the northwest, on the north by the Yukon and the Northwest Territories, on the east by the province of Alberta, and on the south by the U.S. states of Washington, Idaho, and Montana The capital of British Columbia is Victoria, and the largest city in the province is Vancouver which is the third-largest metropolitan area in Canada. British Columbia's economy is largely resource-based, logging and mining and is the site of major Pacific ports. Because of its mild weather, the province is agriculturally rich, particularly in the Fraser and Okanagan Valleys. British Columbia is Canada’s “outdoor playground” and its climate encourages outdoor recreation and tourism year-round.
