Introduction to Alberta

Alberta (AB) is a western Canadian province established on September 1, 1905.

Alberta's Rocky Mountains contain the world famous resort towns of Banff, Jasper, Canmore, Lake Louise and Waterton.

There is boreal forest in the north and prairies in the south. The central aspen parkland region has fertile soil suitable for grain and dairy farming, with ranching and irrigated agriculture in the south. The Alberta badlands in southeastern Alberta feature deep canyons and striking landforms.

Edmonton, Alberta’s capital city is the primary supply and service hub for Canada's oil sands. A big attraction is the West Edmonton Mall, North America's largest shopping and entertainment complex. The mall offers over 800 stores and services and over 110 eateries. About 300 km (190 mi) south of the capital is Calgary, Alberta's largest city. It’s home to the Calgary Stampede, and is a major distribution and transportation hub. Almost 75% of the province's population lives in the Calgary-Edmonton corridor.
