Leta Shores graduated from the Alberta College of Art in 1979 with a major in sculpture after four dedicated years of study in fine arts. She remembers the mutual respect between herself and her instructors. Very influential was Olle Holmsten, a pioneer of figure sculpture in Sweden and Alberta, and who was very highly regarded as a teacher of European traditional figure sculpture. Leta also gained much insight and support working in the college welding shop alongside of Katie Ohe, who is considered to be Alberta's first abstract sculptor. Both share the same passion for working with metal, especially steel. Did you know that Leta took on further education in metalwork with an interest in sheet metal, and in 1981, became the first woman in BC to be a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union?
Also did you know that Leta's return to dedication in sculpture and the "Come Rain or Shine" concept began around 2000 with the call for submissions for the City Hall in Penticton? Penticton had been Leta's home town for years after moving there in 1971 from Winnipeg. The proposal made was for a more garden like depiction of the sculpture fountain along with another choice for Canada Iron Man sculptures. But when the Thompson Okanagan Sculpture Symposium competition for monumental works came along, Leta decided to change the depiction from a garden fountain to be more monumental in appearance, and made this small scale 27" model to present for the full scale work that would have an even flow of water falling from over the umbrella to create a sheer see though veil. The sculpture was unfortunately only one vote away from being commissioned for the symposium. Leta thinks that this would still be a beautiful full scale work, and continues to propose this and other works for commission.
Leta now lives in Oliver BC and runs a small B&B Named - 1 Of A Kind Sculpture B&B.
