In 1824 construction started on the Welland Canal. This ship canal is a part of the St. Lawrence Seaway and it enables ships to ascend and descend the Niagara Escarpment and to bypass Niagara Falls. It extends 42 km (26 mi), linking Lake Erie to Lake Ontario which differ in elevation by 99 m.
The fourth construction on the current canal began in 1913 and was completed in 1932.

The Welland Canal has changed over the years, along with the vessels using it. Today's canal follows
the most direct route of the previous canals, running perpendicular to the Niagara escarpment from Port Wellers to Port Colborne. It is 24.4 m wide and has eight locks, each 262 m long. Water, gravity
and watertight chambers lift vessels up and down the cliff face of the Niagara Escarpment, allowing
behemoth freighters and small pleasure craft to sail to the middle of the North American continent.
The maximum permissible length of a ship in this canal is 225.5 meters (740 feet). It takes ships an
average of about eleven hours to maneuvre the entire length of the Welland Canal.
The Welland Canal closes in winter (January–March) when ice or weather conditions become a hazard to
navigation. Approximately 40,000,000 tonnes of cargo are carried through the Welland Canal annually by a traffic of about 3,000 ocean and Great Lakes vessels.
This canal is officially known now as the Welland Ship Canal. For a whole lot more about this canal, read on...
