Gainer the Gopher is the mascot of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, a Canadian football team. He comes from the small town of Parkbeg, Saskatchewan.
Gainer, whose name is an anagram of "Regina", has been entertaining Rider fans ever since 1977. In 2006, Gainer was given the jersey number 13, symbolizing his contributions as the "13th man" on the field. Prior to this, he wore the jersey number "1/2".
In 30+ years, general managers, coaches, and players have gone, yet Gainer remains as a fixture, an icon of prairie culture. Gainer the Gopher is football. Gainer is Saskatchewan.
