Rita MacNeil grew up in Big Pond, Cape Breton. A shy child, she rarely sang at singing lessons, preferring to sing to her mother. In 1971, she wrote a Need For Restoration for the women's movement. In 1972, she wrote a beauty pageant protest song: Born A Woman. This was her first album title in 1974. It launched Rita into the folk music circuit across Canada. In 1979, she wrote many songs. By the late 1980s, she was known worldwide, in concerts, on TV and receiving awards.
